Bethany Theological Seminary will host an Inaugural Forum titled "Hearing Scriptures of Peace" March 30 - 31 on the Richmond, Indiana campus. The Forum celebrates the recent call of Ruthann Knechel Johansen as president and the role of the Seminary as a resource for the church and beacon for the world.

Dr. Ruthann Knechel Johansen became president of Bethany Theological Seminary in July 2007, and was officially installed and anointed at the October 2007 meeting of the Board of Trustees. The Inaugural Forum publicly marks the beginning of a new chapter at Bethany Seminary and opens the witness of the seminary and the Church of the Brethren to a world hungering for peace and justice. The roots of this witness are in scripture, reach back three hundred years in Church of the Brethren history, engage deeply and broadly faith questions of the present moment, and will extend into the future. We invite you to join us for the celebration of and commitment to this witness.

UPDATE: For those unable to attend the Forum in person, the major sessions will be broadcast live over the internet, so they will be accessible to anyone with a web browser! For more information, proceed to the webcast page.

Forum Overview

The Forum will open on Sunday, March 30, at 1:30 p.m. with a plenary session featuring Dr. Scott Appleby, who will speak about Christian scriptures of peace. President Johansen will share reflections on “Hearing Scriptures of Peace” at the Sunday evening worship service, which will include a performance of Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. On Monday morning Rabbi Rachel Gartner will present Jewish scriptures of peace, and Dr. Rashied Omar will interpret Muslim scriptures of peace at the Monday afternoon plenary session. Forum participants will have opportunity following each plenary session to discuss in small groups.
